Why Men Hesitate To Come To Counseling (Part 1)

What a big topic.... Many men hesitate to come and speak with a counselor for many reasons. In being in the field of counseling and social work for about 17 years, I've realized a few reasons why men hesitate to come to counseling.

Men are typically raised to "tough it out," to "be strong." There is a lot of good in how men are raised to be strong and to be tough, in fact God called Joshua to be strong and courageous over and over until Joshua embraced it and then forged ahead into battle for the promised land. It can become unhealthy for a man to tough it out and be strong when there is too much isolation and loneliness. Toughing life out and being strong can become counterproductive. Unhealthy habits such as porn, drinking, overeating, too much gaming, failed relationships can take over and break us as men.

One of the first things, God said after creating Adam is found in Genesis 2:18 was "The Lord God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."

Quick words of wisdom right there from God, it is not good for us men to be alone. Proverbs 27:17 states, "Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another." Even more Proverbs 11:4 states "Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety."

God has a plan for your life, don't hesitate to come to counseling. Real men dare to go to counseling. Be confident, be brave and reach out today and schedule an appointment.

Counseling is good, Jesus himself was reference as "Wonderful Counselor" in Isaiah 9:6.
